This week we held our annual Mix It Up at Lunch Event! Research shows that if students feel like they have something in common with their peers, they are less likely to bully them and more likely to help them out. We mixed students up at the lunch tables and had them play get to know you bingo. We were very fortunate to have volunteers from Old Dominion Bank and UVA Pediatrics help us facilitate conversation and run the event.
Devante Dowell, Margaret Vincel and Yasmin Gross are our first Superstars of the Week. Devante and Margaret led the morning meeting in their class when their teacher was away and they did a phenomenal job! Yasmin created a world map that included the homeplaces of all of her ESL classmates. Way to go, superstars!
Yesterday, Walker hosted 410 rising 5th graders for a tour of our school and to explore our fine arts classes. The rising 5th graders were all assigned 5th grade "Peer Mentors"- students who have volunteered and trained to be helpers for the rising 5th graders. The peer mentors, pictured above, led their groups of 10-12 students in the tour and in ice breaker activities so the rising 5th graders could get to know students from the other elementary schools. It was a great day and our peer mentors worked hard to make sure our rising 5th graders were comfortable and happy!

The rising 5th graders and their families also came back in the evening for dinner, entertainment from our orchestra and jazz band, information about our school and a scavenger hunt all over the school! We are very excited to welcome this new group of Wolverines!
