The Walker School Counseling Department is made of two grade-level School Counselors, Ms. Dinwiddie and Mr. Ullrich (Mr. U), who “loop” each year with their group of students so that they can work with students and families for the two years that they attend Walker. Looping means that students will have the same school counselor each year they are at Walker. We also have our lead school counselor, Mr. Kronstain (Mr. K), who helps both 5th and 6th graders while also helping support the school counselors at Buford Middle School. We have a full-time Registrar, Mrs. Lee, who maintains records and helps new students and families register to the school.
The counselors work with students in a variety of ways: through individual counseling for developmental/situational problems that may interfere with learning; through small group counseling addressing topics including, but not limited to changing families, grief, resiliency, social skills, improvement of attendance and grades; and by conducting engaging and fun, monthly classroom guidance lessons for character development. They mediate between any students who are in conflict. School counselors consult and collaborate with teachers, other school staff, and outside agencies to create learning environments that are suitable and appropriate for all students. Finally, they work closely with families to engage them in the process of their child’s education.
